For the Land and the People…

If a book bears the land’s name in its title, that land must matter. A lot.

Son of the Borderlands doesn’t just refer to a place—it refers to a people, a legacy, and a hidden power.

Refer to the map of the Mortal Realms, here.

The Borderlands, referring to the Azectrai Valley and the Spires to the east, form the contested line between the warring realms of Blevenia to the east and Solantia to the west. Its current loyalty is to Emperor Taran and Solantia, but its culture and language are still a relic of the Ancients.

In ages past, this was the seat of the Empire Kazia, to which the Mortal Realms paid tribute. But that empire is long dead, its legacy corrupted. What remains is a shadow, a Solantian province called Kazia, now a forgotten echo. It is administered by a westerner, Duke Hauran (the “-an” suffix denotes a male of western blood), given the role as a prize.

Western nobles see the Borderlands as a wild, provincial place. Duke Hauran rarely ventures east of the Spine of Solantia (aka the Western Mountains). Duchess Sara, daughter of the capital, views the land with quiet disdain—a land of simple folk and superstitions.

Why would the Empire of Solantia bleed for it?

The valley is strategic. The fertile valley can feed an army. At the north, the bustling port of Sivatrai; at the south, the most forgiving road to the Far Coast. Rich soil sits between the Great Sea and the Unending Sea. Second, were the valley independent, they could charge tolls to transport goods between Blevenia and Solantia. But above all, its contested history breeds instability. Each great power can buy a foothold, a bulwark against the other.

It is a crucible, a place of high tension. Few value the people of the Borderlands for their own sake.

Enter Agni Kazirian.

He was not born special. Precocious, yes, but the raid that killed his mother was one of many.

It was what answered him.

When the Voice of Ages first spoke to him, it did not offer him release. It offered context. It showed Agni that the Borderlands were not a forlorn place, but a sleeping one. That power once flowed from this valley and could again.

The Borderlands became his mission. To protect. To restore.

For the land and the people.
